Can pornography use become an actual brain addiction?

Donald L. Hilton, Jr. MD, FACS
Clinical Associate Professor
Department of Neurosurgery
University of Texas Health Sciences Center at San Antonio

The human brain is programmed to incentivize behaviors that contribute to survival.  The mesolimbic dopaminergic system rewards eating and sexuality with powerful pleasure incentives.  Cocaine, opioids, alcohol, and other drugs subvert, or hijack, these pleasure systems, and cause the brain to think a drug high is necessary to survive.  Evidence is now strong that natural rewards such as food and sex affect the reward systems in the same way drugs affect them, thus the current interest in ‘natural addiction.’  Addiction, whether to cocaine, food, or sex occurs when these activities cease to contribute to a state of homeostasis, and instead cause adverse consequences.  For instance, when eating causes morbid obesity few will argue that the organism is in healthy balance.  Similarly, pornography causes harm when it impairs or destroys a person’s ability to develop emotional intimacy. SLAVE MASTER
How Pornography Drugs & Changes Your Brain
by Donald L. Hilton Jr., MD

While some have avoided using the term “addiction” in the context of natural compulsions such as uncontrolled sexuality, overeating, or gambling, let us consider current scientific evidence regarding the brain and addiction.

This article will seek to answer two questions: (1) Biologically, is the brain affected by pornography and other sexual addictions? (2) If so, and if such addictions are widespread, can they have a societal effect as well?

The Story of the Gypsy Moth

Let’s begin with a seeming digression. In 1869 the gypsy moth was brought to America to attempt to jumpstart a silk industry. Rarely have good intentions gone so wrong, as the unforeseen appetite of the moth for deciduous trees such as oaks, maples, and elms has devastated forests for 150 years. [Read more...]

Understanding the Addictive Nature of Pornography

Donald L. Hilton, Jr., MD the author of “He Restoreth my Soul” was asked to provide insight into  Pornography Addiction for a new LDS website called Combating Pornography. We found these comments very useful and informative. I have included an excerpt of the article below, as well as a link to the entire article.  Please take time to read this important information.

“Like a computer, the brain stores memories on a “hard drive.” This part of the brain is called the cerebral cortex, which also generates cognition and thought and initiates motor function. It may be called the “thinking” part of the brain. Under the cortex is a relay station called the thalamus, which is integrated into an area under it termed the brainstem. The thalamus and brainstem, among other important functions, regulate pleasure and pain and reward activities such as eating and sexuality, which are important in the survival of the individual and species. Is Pornography a problem?

We received the following comment from a recent visitor to our site.  We asked Don Hilton JR, MD a leading neurosurgeon and author of “He Restoreth My Soul” to provide his input and feedback.  Many in the world share the same attitude and belief towards Pornography / Sexual Addiction as our recent visitor.

Please feel to comment.  We are happy to help in anyway that we can.

Visitor:

Greetings,

The assertion of this website is that pornography and the addiction that it causes, creates great havoc. In what way?   Removing religion and long held beliefs regarding marriage and sexuality (neither of which are in accordance with our nature), I don’t understand how pornography in any way harms sexually healthy adults. Drugs by definition will take a perfectly healthy person and kill them, or at best seriously damage their bodies. I have not found evidence that pornography does this in any way. I believe that what I am seeing is a way to make money off of people who don’t really need treatment or providing marginal benefits to someone who should be seeing a psychiatrist for serious psychological issues that manifest themselves through sexual “addiction”. Like treating the symptom instead of the cause, it is of marginal value. Much of your funding could come from churches and right wing moralists if it doesn’t already. “Financial tip of the day.”

Don Hilton’s response:

Your questions and assertions require more space and time than a simple blog permit, but I provide references for you to explore if you truly desire to learn more about this. [Read more...]

Thank you Don Hilton, JR

Dear Don Hilton;
I have been taking classes for 8 years on Domestic Violence and Addiction(s). I have been so frustrated with bits and pieces of the puzzle and up until I attended your seminar at Thanksgiving Point in May I kept saying, “I just can’t connect the dots.” I had been taught spirituality was part of recovery but that was it. Now I just cry every time I read a chapter in this book, “HE RESTORETH MY SOUL“.

Thank you, Don Hilton JR. He restoreth my soul.

Thank you, Don Hilton JR. He restoreth my soul.

I started studying about domestic violence and addiction because I have been a victim  of that since childhood. It has been such a destructive thing in my life. My descendants and clients are plagued with addictions. I have struggled to get an education and use this knowledge to help others. Every client I have is a product of DV and Addiction(s) and I see children suffer and suffer because parents are blinded or without the necessary skills and education. [Read more...]
